We knew they were good. But few thought they were THIS good:
383-74.
That is the combined points scored by and scored on the Brother Martin Crusaders en route to a 7-0 dual meet record in capturing their second consecutive Deep South Bayou Duals championship.
And nobody expected the Crusaders would wax the runner-up team from Thompson High School in Alabama, the defending Alabama 6A state champions, 51-15. Granted, Thompson did not have their state champion 285 lbs. starter, but in a worst-case scenario that would have only made the final score 45-21. That is still a huge difference from the 29-29 "we have to use criteria h" finals victory last year against Jefferson, GA.
The match marks exactly two years since the Crusaders lost a tournament or a dual meet, which was a December 30th, 2012, semifinals loss to eventual champion MacArthur High School of Oklahoma.
The Crusaders defeated a team from Altus, Oklahoma, in one semifinal match 46-8, while Thompson defeated Holy Cross 38-30 in the other. Holy Cross, after advancing past Jesuit 41-24, defeated Altus 33-28 to place 3rd. Catholic defeated Jesuit 50-18 to take fifth place while Liverpool, New York, squeaked past Rummel 39-37 to place seventh.
Champions - Brother Martin | Runners-up - Thompson High School of Alabama | Third Place - Holy Cross |
Fourth Place - Altus High School of Oklahoma | Sixth Place - Jesuit | Eighth Place - Rummel |
